Legal Assistant – Litigation, Labour and Employment Law, for well established labour and employment law firm client, downtown Toronto.

Job Type: Full Time Permanent.
Compensation:  From $55,000 to $70,000 per annum with full benefits and employer-matched RRSP plan.
Regular Work Hours:  FULL TIME HOURS; from 9 am to 5 pm including 1 hour lunch break, Monday to Friday (35 work hours per week).  Overtime occasionally required according to business need.
Work Location:  100% onsite at client’s downtown Toronto  office, on PATH and near TTC station.

Responsibilities Summary:  
To support 2-lawyer share, working directly with the partners, and additionally maintain responsibility for own files, utilizing superior research and drafting skills. Excellent career growth opportunity for junior to intermediate-level legal assistant or law clerk.

  • Communicate with current and prospective clients, arrange consultations and open new client files.
  • Produce, edit and format legal correspondence, letters, emails and other legal documents and correspondence from templates and written or verbal instructions.
  • Assist in preparation and filing of court and tribunal forms.
  • File documentation with administrative boards and tribunals, and civil courts.
  • Maintain filing and bring forward systems, scanning and printing various documents as required.
  • Maintain appointments calendar.  Schedule meetings, hearings and conference calls with clients, courts, tribunals and other legal agents.  
  • Keep track of imperative dates and timelines for lawyers.
  • Arrange for serving and filing of legal documents with courts, tribunals and opposing counsel.
  • Maintain time dockets.
  • Additional legal administrative and law clerk responsibilities as required. 

Education:  Post-secondary Degree or Diploma as a Legal Assistant or Law Clerk.
Preferred Work Experience:  At least 3+ years of experience supporting an employment law, labour law or civil litigation law practice.

Technical and Language Skills Requirements:

  • Strong proficiency in MSOffice, including Word, Excel and Outlook (will be tested).
  • Superior typing skills (will be tested).
  • Demonstrated attention to detail (will be tested).
  • Excellent knowledge of the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure and court forms (may be tested).
  • CaseLine experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with docketing software preferred.
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal, including advanced level business writing skills, excellent spelling, grammar, proofreading and syntax, and polished, professional telephone manners.

  • Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions and communicating with others within a values framework of respect, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusivity.

Additional Requirements:    

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
  • Ability to work both 100% onsite, abiding by organization health and safety policies.
