Human Rights Advisor – Indigenous Services and Outreach, Provincial Not-for-Profit Community Services Client, downtown Toronto.

Job Type: Direct-Hire Contract, initial term 2+ years.
Compensation: $49,000 per annum + benefits.
Work Location: Onsite, at downtown Toronto office near TTC Station.
Travel Requirements: Possibility of occasional day or overnight travel within Ontario.

Responsibilities Summary:  

  • Providing legal information and advisory and referral services to individuals who have experienced discrimination, and assisting them with Ontario Human Rights Tribunal (HRTO) applications.
  • Acting as the lead service contact for clients who identify as Indigenous, and participating as a member of the organization’s Indigenous Services and Outreach Committee.
  • Receiving and responding to telephone, email and mail, and walk-in inquiries, and providing immediate general, legal and referral information and assistance related to incidents of discrimination and Human Rights Tribunal applications.  
  • Screening and escalating urgent and early intervention inquiries for accelerated service response.
  • Assisting in the early case management process for Indigenous clients and conducting interviews with Indigenous clients as assigned.
  • Providing research, interpretation and/or translation services to the organization’s legal team as required.
  • Attending mediations and hearings with counsel, as required.
  • Participating in regular regional legal team meetings.
  • Additional related client service, advisory, research, communications, coordinative and administrative responsibilities as required.


Education:  Post secondary education or equivalent combination of applicable experience and training.
Preferred Experience:  Client service experience from a legal, community service, or advocacy organization serving Indigenous clients.

Technical Skills Requirements:

  • Strong MSOffice proficiency, including Word, Excel and Outlook (will be tested).
  • Fast and accurate Data Entry (will be tested)
  • Proficient business writing skills (will be tested).
  • Familiarity with contact centre telephony equipment and systems (e.g. headset, multiple lines, CRM software).
  • Familiarity with standard office equipment and administrative processes.

Task -Based Qualifications and Additional Attributes:     

  • Strong understanding of Ontario human rights legislation such as the Human Rights Code.
  • Strong understanding of human rights issues affecting Indigenous communities gained from working and/or living in Indigenous communities; and knowledge of historical, cultural and legal challenges faced by Indigenous community members in Ontario.
  • Familiarity with the Ontario human rights system organizations and formal issues resolutions processes. 
  • In-depth knowledge of community resources and proficient understanding of diversity, cultural competence, and legal research principles.
  • Proficient English communication skills, both written and verbal.  
  • Superior interpersonal skills; excellent listening skills; and ability to work well both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, and liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to respond to sensitive matters with tact, discretion, and excellent judgement.  Demonstrated commitment to client service and professional representation of the organization.
  • Proven ability to professionally handle confidential information.
  • Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions and communicating with others within a values framework of respect, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusivity.
  • Ability to work well within a demanding, busy contact centre environment mandated to provide a wide range of complex information and services, and to respond professionally to escalated or crisis situations.   
  • Satisfactory Background Checks, Technical Skills Evaluations, Employment References and COVID Clearance as required.
