Communications Specialist for provincial government ministry client, remote-based.

Job Type:  Temporary.
Initial Term:  ASAP for approximately 4-6 weeks.
Compensation: $36.83 per hour to $53.07 per hour, according to experience.

Regular Work Hours: 7.25 work hours per day, not including unpaid lunch break, to be worked during regular business hours, Monday to Friday (36.25 work hours per week).
Work Location:  Remote-based.

Responsibilities Summary: 
Collaborate with designated Infrastructure Technology Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop compelling award nominations in a story-telling style for a variety of projects, individuals, and team submissions.  Liaise with the Strategic Communications Office at key points in the writing process.

  • Establish relationships with SMEs to understand their submission requirements, and provide guidance on award submission process, requirements, and timelines.
  • Search out and gather required information to develop compelling award submissions. Ensure timely collection of supporting documentation including testimonial letters, etc.
  • Facilitate meetings on awards submission best practices.
  • Research, evaluate, compose, and edit award submissions for approval by designated SMEs and senior management. Consult with designated Strategic Communications Office contact, asking questions and receiving feedback and direction accordingly.  
  • Distil complex subject matter into clear, relevant information and metrics. Write detailed, extensive descriptions.
  • Facilitate submissions review and approval process with SMEs and other stakeholders. 
  • Proactively drive awards nominations process forward through follow-up communications and relationship management.  Respond to unexpected changes to deadlines, fluctuating volumes and pace of incoming work, tight time pressures and conflicting work priorities.
  • Ensure all award nominations submitted via online submission before deadline.
  • Additional research, communications, facilitation, coordination, relationship management, and writing responsibilities as required.

Education:  Post Secondary or Post Graduate Degree in Corporate Communications or related discipline.
Preferred Work Experience:  At least 5+ years of progressive, related work and/or academic experience.

Technical and Language Skills Requirements:    

  • Advanced proficiency in MSOffice including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Strong overall technical proficiency and sound knowledge of effective utilization and application of software tools.
  • Advanced English communication skills, both written and verbal, including expert level business writing skills and strong technical writing and creative writing skills.
  • Excellent verbal presentation skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex concepts to a diverse range of audiences.

Task -Based Qualifications and Additional Attributes:     

  • Extensive experience writing and editing award submissions and associated collateral (e.g. testimonials).
  • Proven ability to respond to inquiries, to lead and coordinate meetings, to develop and make presentations, and to provide guidance.
  • Ability to gather and distil technical information into plain language.
  • Sound knowledge of the Canadian Press (CP) style guide.
  • Demonstrated record of professional conduct and character. Responsible, reliable and works to deadlines. 
  • Proven ability to professionally handle confidential information and exercise good judgement in the interpretation and application of instructions and organization policy.
  • Advanced organizational, coordinative and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize work effectively for self and others, meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply project management principles, methodologies and best practices.
  • Strong relationship management skills including client relations management, business networking, negotiation and consulting/advisory skills.  Excellent listening skills, and the ability to provide and receive effective feedback.  
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills; ability to motivate and engage with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders, at all levels of seniority.
  • Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions and communicating with others within a values framework of respect, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusivity.

Additional Requirements:    

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
  • Ability to work remotely, abiding by organization health and safety policies.
  • Ability to declare personal Non-Conflict of Interest in execution of assignment responsibilities prior to assignment start.
  • Provision of certification of AODA and OHSA online training course completion prior to assignment start.
  • Satisfactory Background Checks and Employment References.
